"Do you know when you'll be chatting with the band?" an inquiry pops up. "I was hoping to ask if I can become their newest bandmate."

There is only a key snag: The author likewise longs to be the Haims' additional sibling. And we're far from alone. Several famous admirers have also coveted the position.

It's clear a special quality is happening. The siblings Este, Danielle and Alana started their path playing gigs at small eateries with their parents. Presently, they stand as multi-time Grammy Award hopefuls.

In the tradition of the most iconic groups, they're a inseparable trio. Their videos often show them striding in harmony down the roads of Los Angeles. On stage, they play with such pure happiness you inevitably think, "I'd love to be part of that, too."

"The amount of times on tour that young girls approached us and said, 'After your show, I got a drum kit'," states Alana, the youngest of the Haim siblings. "That is the biggest honor. That is recognition in itself. We have succeeded if we can encourage others to form a group."

"So anyone is invited to be the honorary member of Haim."

Historic Milestone

The group are connecting from their homes, where they're recovering after an major tour in support of their new album, I Quit.

They're right now reeling from the news it's been shortlisted for best rock album at the Grammys – with Haim the pioneering all-woman band ever in the running for the prize.

"I watch the announcements every year, so it sort of feels like The Truman Show when your name is read out," explains Alana. "I immediately called my sisters to say, 'Am I hearing this right or am I hallucinating'?"

The significance of the accolade isn't lost on the band.

"We really set out to make a guitar-driven album this time, so it's a huge achievement," adds Alana. "However we're just thankful for the female artists that came before us."

Emotional Upheaval and Candor

The album came out of a period of personal change. All three sisters found themselves single, and the music captures that unique transitional period where you're happy to be free, but not yet ready to let go.

The themes follow departures and partings. The sisters seek love, but not the relationships they've experienced. You can hear them determining in real time who they want to be.

"I adore description, yes," says Danielle. "I Quit is like a mantra. You have to consciously practice shutting out the outside opinions and saying, 'I couldn't care less what people think'."

Refinement of Style

That newfound resilience called for a new sound – more unpolished and direct than any of the music the band had done before.

For Danielle, who co-produced the album, that started with the drum sound.

"The drum sound is such a specific thing, and I care so much about it," she says.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the title of our biography," jokes Alana. "Our motto is, our albums cannot begin until we find the right drum sound."

Anecdotes and Shared Humor

The trio's openness fueled the album's promotional campaign, where the sisters shared some of their dating horror stories.

A former partner ended things with Este over a medical concern. Alana recalled a story of travelling to celebrate New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a casual gesture at midnight.

"During these setbacks, you just feel like there's no hope," says Alana. "Therefore to be able to find humor in those stories and have them tell you even crazier stories, it's incredible."

A Secure Future

One can easily sense a change in the band. Now, Haim are more confident of their position in the rock pantheon.

They're top-billed acts, with successful albums and an international audience.

However Haim will always be their top focus.

"My sisters and I have been performing since I was little," concludes Alana. "It feels as if no alternative that we were supposed to do. And I'm really grateful we've gotten here and we're still making music."
