During an first day in the mayor's office, Zohran Mamdani committed to “transform” America's largest city, promising “a different age” and an ambitious commencement to his term.

An Unprecedented Figure

The young political star, who just a year ago remained a relatively obscure state assemblyman, now stands as the city's first Muslim mayor. He also made history by being the inaugural to be sworn in using the Islamic holy text.

“A moment like this is rare and rarer still is it that the people themselves whose hold the levers of change,” Mamdani added.

The inauguration was a two-part event, starting with a late-night oath-taking in a disused subway station. He was officially inaugurated on the steps of city hall by Vermont independent senator Bernie Sanders, who spoke of Mamdani's ascent as a victory over political establishments.

A Costly Policy Agenda

Mamdani now faces one of the most unrelenting jobs in American politics, with a agenda including:

• Universal childcare
• Free buses
• A rent freeze for about 1 million households
• A trial program of city-run grocery stores

The projected $10 billion price tag of these services may pose a hurdle to finance. Mamdani has pledged to tax more heavily the richest residents and big business. However, as a municipality under the authority of the state government, he will require the legislative support of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Managing External Challenges

The new mayor must contend with concern from some Jewish New Yorkers alarmed by his past criticisms regarding Israel. Tensions were revealed during the transition when a senior aide stepped down over offensive past social media posts.

Mamdani has attempted to smooth over these concerns by persuading Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to remain, preventing the appearance of losing a Jewish police chief.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has labeled Mamdani a “communist” and threatened withholding federal funding. Despite this, a recent encounter between the two was reportedly unexpectedly friendly.

The Basic Tests of Leadership

As his work begins, Mamdani and his wife will relocate from their Astoria apartment to the historic mayoral residence. The previous occupant offered a quirky piece of advice about a reputed resident spirit in the home, which reportedly only haunts those who do not act to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani concluded his speech with a direct statement: “The work has only just begun.”
