White House Announces Federal Employee Job Cuts as Shutdown Approaches Three-Week Mark

Administration officials disclosed the start of federal worker terminations on Friday, following through on prior threats linked to the ongoing US government shutdown, which is set to stretch into its third consecutive week.

Formal Statement and Initial Details

Russell Vought wrote on a public platform that “RIFs have begun,” indicating the official procedure for letting employees go.

While the official provided no details on which agencies were impacted, a representative from the Treasury Department stated that layoff warnings had been distributed within that agency. Furthermore, a DHS representative indicated that layoffs would also occur at the CISA. Also, a union for federal workers confirmed that members at the Department of Education would be impacted by the staff cuts.

Union Response and Court Actions

Union leaders cautions that the layoffs would have “devastating effects” on services relied upon by millions of Americans and pledged to challenge the actions in the legal system.

This is shameful that the administration has exploited the government shutdown as an excuse to wrongfully terminate numerous employees who deliver essential functions to communities nationwide,” said a national union president, who leads the AFGE.

The AFL-CIO responded to the news, saying, “America’s unions will see you in court.”

Political Standoff and Funding Battle

Lawmakers from the Democratic party have declined to vote for a GOP-supported legislation to restore funding unless it contains provisions related to health policy. After repeated failed attempts, the Senate’s Republican leaders have adjourned the Senate until the following week, meaning the deadlock is unlikely to be resolved soon.

During a press conference, the GOP leader in the House, Mike Johnson, criticized Senate Democrats for not supporting the GOP proposal, which passed in the House on a near party-line vote.

“This is the last paycheck that government employees will see until opposition leaders decide to do their job and reopen the government,” Johnson said. Beginning shortly, military personnel, many of whom live paycheck to paycheck, are going to miss a full paycheck.”

Legal and Operational Constraints

Last week, unions filed for a temporary restraining order to block the government from carrying out any layoffs during the funding gap. Moreover, a court official ordered the government to disclose details on termination strategies, impacted departments, and whether any government staff had been brought back to execute layoffs.

An analysis contended that a government shutdown limits the ability of the administration to carry out firings, citing guidance that admitted any long-term staff cuts need to have been initiated before the funding expired.

Consequences for Employees

The layoffs occurred on the very day that government employees got only a incomplete payment for the final days of September but not the start of October, since funding expired at the start of the period.

A public service advocate, the head of the non-profit Partnership for Public Service, condemned the gridlock’s impact on government workers.

This is unjust to make federal employees bear the burden because our leaders in the legislature and the White House have failed to keep our federal operations open and operational,” the advocate stated. The flight regulators, VA nurses, smoke jumpers and food inspectors are not responsible for this funding crisis.”

The irony is that lawmakers and top administration officials are continuing to be paid during the shutdown.
